I'm in the slump. It's the one that hits, oh, every couple of months. The one where I have to trudge on and do something to get out of it. Lots of it can be blamed on being busy, busy at work, busy at home. Some of it can be blamed on travel, though sometimes travel gives me opportunity to write more. Honestly, it is blamed on laziness and prioritization.I have a couple of things that I need to work on, namely, that revision that I have out there, and finishing a first draft of another one. However, there are "perceived" hurdles to these and I have to overcome them, somehow.
On the revision, my hurdle is really "where to start." I have some concepts of things that I would like to do, but I am not sure exactly where to go in and get started on making those changes. I guess it is just back-up one copy of the novel and start hacking away at a second copy. Any suggestions? I know I have to do some scene-by-scene evaluation stuff, I guess, but there may be broader/bigger scope items that I should be looking for first.
On the draft, well, I got bored with it. In the middle of a gunfight. Seriously. So, while I know how this needs to end, I am skeptical about going in and ending it right away. Though that is what needs to happen. So it will happen, and it will happen in the way I had previously determined. I just need to sit down and write it. Perhaps I can do that on my next plane trip (after working on actual work, which also has to happen on the plane trip).
Ultimately, I need someone with a stick prodding me along to get stuff done, and without firm deadlines (even if I have self-imposed resolution-type deadlines), I'm not prioritizing and getting this stuff done.
Do you have special tricks to motivating yourself to write or edit? Do you have tricks for me on how to start my revision? If so, please please please post em in the comments. And thank you.
We'll see where we are next week (hopefully with the draft finished).
