What this leaves me with is the "daily-writing-habit-envy" of wanting to have a daily habit of cranking out a couple of hundred words, but not having that.
Since I know that it is really a self-discipline issue, I am evaluating a few strategies for how I could actually get into a "write more regularly" habit. Here are my thoughts so far:
- Set aside a specific time - In order for me to write like clockwork, there has to be a regular time for me to write. Just like I
always posttry to post something here every Wednesday, I need a regular interval to at least write x number of words. The schedule means that I have to prioritize and set aside the time (avoid watching that one episode of Chuck off the Tivo until tomorrow if I have to get the writing done). - Set a specific goal - To do what I really NEED to do, that would have to be about 2000-5000 words a week, but I don't want to set myself up for failure out of the gate. I can always raise the bar later, so perhaps 500 words once a week is an admirable goal. I need to be able to see some success in building the habit, I think, so I can psychologically convince myself that it is working. I also need to set planning goals and do certain prep work tasks outside of just the actual writing. But I need to be writing more than I am, for sure.
- Be realistic - As I learned when I tried to do NaNoWriMo last year with the November PAD challenge along with schedule changes at home, I need to be realistic in assessing what I can and cannot do from a production standpoint.
Do you have a daily writing habit? What tips do you have?
